How do the Clippers deal with this week’s NBA Draft lottery?
Lakers Head Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday the team has no plans to trade its first-round pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, which is expected to be announced Wednesday night.
“We have no intention of trading our first round pick, so that means nothing,” Rivers said on SiriusXM NBA Radio.
Rivers reiterated that he believes that the Los Angeles Lakers will be a contender in the coming years.
The Lakers are expected to receive a first-rounder in the first round, which will be awarded at the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery.
If the Lakers are able to pick at least five picks, they could be able to take a player with the pick in 2019, which would put them in position to make a splash during the 2019 draft lottery.
“That would be an unbelievable opportunity for us to pick a player that could make a big impact and play for the Lakers in a few years,” Rivers told SiriusXM.
“It’s something that we have to evaluate, but I’m not concerned.
We have a very strong team and a very talented group of players.
It’s just about the process of getting it right.”
The Clippers will likely receive their first pick in Thursday’s draft, but it’s not expected to land the top pick.
If they do land the No. 1 overall pick, it would be one of the most coveted picks in franchise history.
Los Angeles’ first pick is No. 15 overall, but the Lakers would still have to get a franchise player for it.
The draft is set to be held on Wednesday, May 29 at 6 p.m.
It will be televised on ESPN and NBA Network.
Rivers said that he expects the Lakers to be competitive for the No, 1 pick, but he isn’t concerned about that prospect.
“I’m not worried about it,” Rivers added.
“When the time comes and we’re in position, we’ll evaluate it.
It’ll all come down to the decision that we make.”
Rivers also said that his team will not be trading its second-round selection in the 2019 Draft Lotteries.
“Our team has not traded its second round pick in this draft,” Rivers stated.
“There’s no reason for us not to.”
Rivers added that the team will be evaluating all the players it is targeting in the 2020 NBA Draft.
“This draft is going to be very competitive,” Rivers noted.
“You’ve got a great team of players that are going to compete for the same draft pick.
We just want to make sure that we’re going to make the right decision for our team.”
